April 21. - a bad day for desktop-only websites

Seosiker mobilra optimalizált

Google made a surprising step on 26th february, 2015: they made an announcement about a change in the algorythm, that waill affect sites that are not smartphone friendly.
It is surprising because they got the website owner's attention plus they are leaving them time to get ready and make some changes.

Why now?

This announcement was a surprise for us too, so we waited for it. It happened many times in history that someone said something and then nothing really happened. Right now it seems that this announcement is real because nothing really changed since then. In fact Google even confirmed the update of the algorythm that is called #Mobilgeddon.

What does "mobile-friendly" mean?

Long story short: the sites that are using exactly the same content of their desktop versions, and while browsing on such a page like that you shouldn't be able to scroll sideways and you don't have to zoom either. Just like you would view it from your PC or laptop.

If your visitor is checking your page from a mobile device, he/she shouldn't have any difficulty while doing so.

  • Same content, videos and pictures are available as well.
  • Content must match the viewport ( screen ) width.
  • Buttons must be big enough for easy handling.
  • Same rule applies for the fonts as well. They're should be big enough so the users can read them comfortably.
  • No. Flash. Period.
  • Use the "meta viewport" tag as well.

How to check if your site is mobile-friendly or not?

You have more than one tools to test that. In the first hand of course whe have this tool right here that analyses your site and tests it with more resolutions.

In addition, I will recommend you Google's speed testing environment because it just got and extension in the past few months, that checks the speed on mobile-devices: Google PageSpeed Insights. They have a more specific test as well called "Google Mobile friendly".

These tools are a bit different: if Googlebot is disallowed from your site ( robots.txt ), the test won't be able to read JS, CSS and other sources.

If you have a Webmaster Tools account, you will be warned if your website is not mobile-friendly.

What to do when your page is not mobile-friendly?

First, take a deep breath. Then, call your programmer. You will find solutions based on the back end of your site: maybe it needs some adjustments only, but it is possible that you have to re-think and restructure your whole site.

How much will it cost you?

Depending on the structure and the size of problems the actual price of making a site mobile-friendly may vary.
