The rise and the fall of the keyword statistics

Since 2011 Google is using secure search if a user is logged in.
In the last few days however every single Google search is performed through a secured https channel.

If you optimized your page based on keyword statistics: you're in trouble!

What happens and why?

If you are not logged into your profile you might see a little message about cookie policy.

According to Google:

"A cookie is a small piece of text sent to your browser by a website you visit. It helps the website to remember information about your visit, like your preferred language and other settings. That can make your next visit easier and the site more useful to you. Cookies play an important role. Without them, using the web would be a much more frustrating experience.

We use cookies for many purposes. We use them, for example, to remember your safe search preferences, to make the ads you see more relevant to you, to count how many visitors we receive to a page, to help you sign up for our services and to protect your data.

You can see a list of the types of cookies used by Google and also find out how Google and our partners use cookies in advertising. Our privacy policy explains how we protect your privacy in our use of cookies and other information."

From a view of SEO experts:

We could feel the improved security already when the keyword selection tool disappeared from AdWords. Nowadays only people with a webmaster account can use a tool called "estimated traffic".

Google does not like to be in the red; even if the try to hide, the ads are getting more important.

You can't really manipulate your ads anymore because some of the data and the statistics are not available.

On the Webmaster Tools surface we still can check how our page performed and on which positin did it show up in the search results; but we can only see the first 2000 results/day and only for the last 90 days (Google promised that they will raise the number to 365 days).

There is still a loophole however: if you're advertising you can see how effective your keywords are, how many times the ads showed up and how many people clicked on them.

According to these informations the optimization of webpages is not that easy anymore.

Bing and other search engines are still sending the searches via unsecured connection... :)
